Unity announces official Unity Editor for Linux

Even though there has been a Unity Editor for Linux available for a few years now, it has always been marked as 'experimental'. Starting today, it has moved into a 'preview' phase meaning that it is now an officially supported product by Unity.

In today's announcement Unity mentions growing demand in the film, automotive, and manufacturing industries as the primary reason for this change in status of the Linux editor. However, game developers will naturally benefit alongside these industries from a more stable Unity Editor.

The target Linux environment is a standard Ubuntu LTS 16.04 or 18.04 setup. So expect to have the best experience there.

Game developers will still need to take care with any third-party Unity plugins or tools that they make use of, since not all are compatible with Linux. Such an issue was why cloaks were missing in Pillars of Eternity, for example.

Unity Editor for Linux is available from Unity Hub.
