Valve announces VR headset Index details and pricing

Valve released more information on its Index VR headset today by launching a new landing page for the product. Among the details are pricing, availability, and minimum system requirements.

The full kit includes the headset, two controllers, and two base stations for room-scale VR and is currently priced at 1,079EUR. Certainly not cheap, but not ludicrously expensive either. There's also a package with just the headset and controllers for 799EUR.

Valve is saying that Index is also interchangeable with certain Vive and Vive Pro hardware. So if you have Vive base stations or controllers already, you have the option to purchase only the headset to save a bit of money.

It also goes without saying at this point that SteamOS/Linux support has been announced day 1. Annoyingly though, Valve's 'Are You Ready?' test application is Windows only and fails to launch through Proton. However, the recommended system specs are a quad-core CPU with at least a GTX 1070. Nothing too extreme but with these requirements, combined with the price, VR will likely continue to be an enthusiasts product.

I'm very interested to see how this product launch goes for Valve. While the Steam Link and Steam Controller were not failures, and have gained quite a cult following, I think that they failed to reach to critical success Valve was hoping for. And I am a big fan of the Steam Link.

Pre-orders for all package variants of the Index start tomorrow are said to start shipping on June 28th of this year.
