No Players Online - a short horror experience from a game jam

No Players Online is a small horror experience created by Adam Pype and Viktor Kraus for the Game a Month game jam.

The story begins by finding an old VHS tape with some strange writing on it referring to an old capture the flag project. After inserting it into the player, it offers a list of empty CTF servers to join.

I'm not quite sure I understand the premise of 'playing' a VHS tape, but it's a good excuse to apply a cool VHS/CRT filter to the game. The filter, combined with the simple graphics, do a good job of bringing back the feeling of playing old-school FPS games on a CRT monitor. The audio is also on point in No Players Online and manages to illicit some very uneasy feelings.

For such a short experience the story is surprisingly compelling with a moral decision that player has to make. There's also a fair few secrets for those looking for something more.

No Players Online can be played through in about 15 minutes and is currently available on itch.io. Or check out our playthrough video.
